About the Author
I was born in 1957 in Houston, Texas. I had a long career in the oilfields of South Texas, before going back to earn a business degree from Texas A&M University. Though I started as Class of '80, I finished as Class of '91. One of my favorite T-shirts says, "College, the 12 best years of my life!" and I mean it. Once I started back, I found it difficult to stop, earning an MS from A&M and a Ph. D. from the University of Colorado. I have served on the faculty of UTSA, Idaho State University, and the University of St. Thomas, in Houston. I have worked with a variety of marketing research firms to measure, analyze, and develop customer/brand relationships. I founded Storyed Solutions to provide marketing and management research solutions to industry and higher education. I have been married for over 30 years, to the same wife, and have three lovely daughters. My Business Short Books compile material that I have used to supplement my teaching and give students a deeper understanding of specific strategic topics. They include insights, examples, and equations (when appropriate). They are not designed to replace textbooks, but convey a level of understanding not typically available from the typical textbook chapter. I learned to surf, at 49, when we decided to move back to Texas, from Idaho. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. Excellent content, but poor writing.

In terms of its content, this is definitely the best introductory text to operating system and concurrency. Unfortunately, Jean Bacon's writing style has caused tremendous headaches among her students at Cambridge. This is how one student used to put it:"Every word has its meaning, but when they were put together, they make no sense in Jean Bacon's book!" My personal experience was that I had to read the same paragraph at least 3 to 4 times in order to understand the message. In short, this book is for serious reader only. You need all the patience, and determination in order to finish reading this book. (like us, who had to answer the exam questions she set!)

Well intentioned, poorly executed

I have great respect for the author of this book, as she undoubtedly knows her stuff (hence two stars, not one), however, she would have been well advised to have employed an editor before the final draft was published. The intent of each section is lost in a fog of cross-referencing and over-explanation. Get this book if: a) It's a required text b) You're a genius with time to kill c) You're extremely patient and keen to learn d) If the latest edition has been substantially edited

Great content but hard to read

I used this book for a "Distributed Computing" college course that I taught in 1999. So I read it pretty thoroughly. Overall I can't find many errors, and I thought the range of content was excellent, very thorough. In some places she is more complete than Tanenbaum. But I had to really struggle with some of the writing. It just wasn't very clear. Her sentences tend to be very long and complex which obfuscates the meaning.

About the Author
J. Don George is the senior pastor of Calvary Church in Irving, Texas. During his tenure, the church has grown from fifty-nine people to over 10,000. He graduated from Wayland Baptist University, studied at LSU and the University of Texas at Arlington, and received a Doctor of Divinity from Oral Roberts University. He serves on several seminary, university, and ministry boards. He and his wife, Gwen, have three children and six grandchildren.
