Professor Wang’s research interests focus on the study and development of fundamentally important and practically useful organic materials, including nonlinear optical chromophores and polymers, near-infrared chromogenic materials, chiroptical materials, and photocurable polymers.

and Great Britain. We all know about Captain America

Dittmer analyses the superheroes who take their names from and give their allegiance to three countries: The United States, Canada, and Great Britain. We all know about Captain America, while Union Jack and Captain Canuck are much more unknown and surprising. He explains the characters’ politics and histories in-text, and analyses these from the standpoint of geopolitical theory. Dittmer follows how the characters changed as the attitudes of the public of their nation, and the nation’s international policies, have changed. For example, the character of Captain America’s sidekick Bucky was able to happily kill Nazi soldiers in the 1940s. The violence was justified and celebrated as a fantasy for children who wanted to support the soldiers. In later years, an American child wielding a machine gun in a war zone was seen as horrifying and inappropriate. Captain America, who had at first encouraged Bucky, had to undergo a retelling where he disapproved and tried to defend his sidekick’s innocence. The characters also take on different political actions and identities depending on how many countries the title is meant to be sold to. Dittmer’s example of this is the Marvel Canadian team title Alpha Flight, which started as giving Canada representation in a very United States-centered industry but later became yet another branch of X-Men.
I want to see an updated version of this book now that many important and interesting changes have been made in the comic book industry. For example, the first two chapters focus on the choice of personifying a country as which race and which gender. These chapters would have to change some meanings and explanations now that Marvel has published a female Latina America-based hero (America Chavez of Young Avengers) and the current Captain America is Sam Wilson. Wilson is not the first African-American character to don the identity of Captain America, and that is briefly discussed in this book. Unfortunately, I think this book focuses too much on global political theory and symbolism without considering what factual, traceable events were occurring in the world to motivate creation and changes in nationalist superheroes.

Captain my Captain

The great strength of this book is that it shows how comic book creators negotiate tricky questions of ideology and nationalism over long period of time. Dittmer's Captain America finds new ways of asserting his nationalist identity over the years both responding to crisis, say Watergate, and triumph. Superhero comics may have faintly ridiculous plot lines especially when read over many years, but Dittmer does a great job of unpacking stories for the ways in which they construct identity without getting over involved in the minutiae. To a certain extent it is the ways that writers mobilize histories, myths, and legends to keep their characters of the moment that lets us see how comics do not just reflect ideology but create it. A figure like Captain America is hugely variegated and Dittmer shows us how that works nonetheless to make him a nationalist superhero.

Consumed My Whole Day - Very Enjoyable Read & Interesting

I had this pre-ordered after reading the WSJ article. It came yesterday around noon and I finished it at 4:00 AM this morning, with few breaks within that time frame. It wasn't the plan for my day, but I don't regret changing my day around to read this book.

I would say any book that holds my interest like that deserves a 5-start rating, though there are a few things that I'd tweak to get it closer to perfection. My official score, being a tough grader, is a 4.6/5.0 and I wouldn't resell it for twice what I paid ... especially now that it's fully highlighted and sticky-noted throughout (which makes the book more valuable to me now because I've identified the portions that spoke directly to me and my own experiences).

I really enjoyed Scott's independent thinking and challenges of conventional wisdom throughout this book, especially as it contrasts with other self-help, goal-setting or business advice books. For instance, choosing an opportunity for which one has some sort of inherent advantage rather than blindly prescribing "you can do whatever you want" appeals to my pragmatic mind. I have wrestled with this exact conclusion within the past year as I work through my own list of new ideas and opportunities, so I enjoyed that perspective as it resonates with my own thinking.

I really enjoyed the thinking on pg. 40, which is fully highlighted, less perhaps a couple sentences. This is where Scott talks about his mental model of not wanting to sell his time due to limited upside and finding a product that is infinitely scalable. I appreciated this candidness, which allows the reader to better understand the later "luck" and apparent rapid success of Dilbert. It's clear to me, Scott's success was a lifetime in the making, the product of continued experimentation and the tenacity to stay at it. This whole book was helpful to me, as my model is exactly the same and the road to success is anything but certain when you're placing bets on what the public wants. Having a system that embraces and anticipates failure, in particular, is an essential tool to avoid letting temporary results bleed over into derailing what could be a highly successful longer-term career choice.

Pg. 88, talking about when to quit and how successful ventures often have SOME element of success early-on also resonated with me, and is another page that is more yellow than white after reading this book. These comments also directly resonated with some false-starts I've had, where I correctly pulled the plug after minimal investment of time because things just did not feel right almost from the get-go. I felt poorly about pulling the red handle so early while I was ejecting, but now looking back I know I was practicing the exact type of discipline one needs to practice when trying totally new things. Plan on a good chunk of your initial tests, ideas and hypotheses being off the mark and blindly plowing time and effort at soft-starts is a recipe for disaster. One of my favorite quotes in the book is "Persistence is useful, but there's no point in being an idiot about it." That got a "lol!"

I also appreciated Scott's thoughts on useful core skills, especially psychology. This topic has become more and more interesting to me after sluffing through Pscych 202 in college, when it seems like a diversion from more useful topics. I now see how important that is, and also how little I know in this universe of knowledge. The terms page of psychological topics is a lifetime of potential study in itself, so the book leads you to new domains of study if you so choose.

Scott urges the reader to not accept anything at face value, and my personal model embraces a good chunk of this body of wisdom with a few of my own twists. Any book that holds your interest and gives you new things to think about is worth owning and reading, in my opinion. This book satisfies that criteria with ease. excellent advice

The book was a joy to read

His key ideas are easy to follow because he keeps it simple and Scott Adams writes in a clear and witty manner

For example the chapter on applying a system vs setting goals and trying to follow them was worth the price of the book many times over for me (and this is reinforced through the book). In his own words goals are a reach-it-and-be-done situation (where you are often waiting to achieve it someday in the future) whereas a system is something you do on a regular or daily basis with a reasonable expectation that doing so will get you to a better place in life. Wanting better health or wanting to lose 10 kg are goals. Being active everyday is a system. One is tied to another - but goals people are fighting the feeling of discouragement at each turn and the systems people are feeling good every-time they apply their system.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone smart and weary of reading tired cliches in the self-help genre. The book is a breath of fresh air!

An Almost Successful Book about Success

Scott Adams's How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big: Kind of the Story of My Life is almost a success. In it Adams tells us about he succeeded and offers his readers his advice on how to be both successful and happy.

Adams is at his best when he writes about figuring out how things work and what is important. Readers of his popular blog will recognize such topics as the moist robot, the single most important metric to measure, the five most important factors for happiness, how to thrive without using freewill, and other such topics.

One of his key principles is to distinguish goals from systems. Generally, it's better to pursue a system to get what you want rather than to pursue a goal. Goals are generally bad things as they focus you on what you have not accomplished and therefore feel negative. Unfortunately his discussion of the difference between goals and systems is confused and unclear. He seems to be saying that the reader's goal should be to come with a system that works.

I do appreciate that Adams consistently urges the reader to experiment, to be open minded, and not to follow the advice of cartoonists. The focus should be on what works for you. His humility is a welcome relief from much of the Success literature.

Some parts of the book, especially in the middle chapters, read like annotated lists constructed quickly from Internet searches. Other parts of the book are much better and many of Adams's insights are interesting, captivating, and even brilliant. The tone of this book is quite serious - there are even research footnotes - and it is clear that Adams believes he has something important to share with the reader. Fortunately much of the book is entertaining and includes humorous examples to lighten the occasionally sententious tone of some pronouncements.

Overall this is a useful and interesting book. I look forward to testing some of his suggestions and seeing if they improve my life.

About the Author

Ilya Mikhelson had more than 30 years of experience in design, research, and teaching design of bridges, tunnels, subway stations, and buildings. He wrote numerous publications, including Precast Concrete for Underground Construction, Tunnels, and Subways and Building Structures.

Tyler G. Hicks, PE, is a consulting engineer and a successful engineering book author. He has worked in plant design and operation in a variety of industries, taught at several engineering schools, and lectured both in the United States and abroad. Mr. Hicks holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Cooper Union School of Engineering in New York. He is the author of more than 20 books in engineering and related fields, including Civil Engineering Formulas, Handbook of Mechanical Engineering Calculations, and Handbook of Energy Engineering Calculations.

Good Reference

So I read this book, and I think there is good coverage of topics overall. Go back and look at the good reviews that people have left about the first edition of this book, a couple people have made previous reviews in regards to using this book for engineering practice and as a study aid for the P.E. exam. The civil and structural engineering principles are perfectly in line, and the book is very thin to carry around; so you'll hardly notice it is in your briefcase.

I noticed that this book is not up to date, which is why I have a four-star review here. I will explain why the book is not up to date.

For instance, on page 132 of this book is a page on base plates for columns. The equation this book has for allowable bearing pressure is 0.35*f'c*square root(A2/A1). Now in the ACI 318-11 and AISC 360-05 codes, the equation is 0.85*f'c*square root(A2/A1). So the mathematical coefficients are different due to updated codes, but the equations and engineering principles are the same.

In Chapter 2 or 3 of this book, there are some formulas for properties of geometric sections. The author used Roark's Formulas for Stress and Strain, 4th edition. There is an 8th edition of Roark's formulas in print right now.

good basic formulas

Check the variables!

Inconsistent notation. For example, on the same page, it shows bending stress = M/S and shear stress = SV/Ib, except the two Ss aren't the same value. Again, on the same page, it shows S = I/c and SV/Ib = 3V/2A for rectangles. Great. But knowing that the shear modulus (S)=bh^2/6 and I=bh^3, SV/Ib 3V/2A. Why couldn't they use shear stress = QV/Ib like everyone else? Q being the static moment, not the shear modulus. In fairness, they do an example on the next page making it clear they aren't the same thing, but why use the same variable on the same page two rows apart from each other when they don't represent the same value!? It's supposed to be a quick reference guide. If you quickly looked at that page and ran with it, you'd get the wrong answer.

About the Author

Joseph Mayo practices architecture in the Pacific Northwest where he concentrates on materiality, technology and form for a regionally appropriate building culture. He has worked on a variety of building types, ranging from schools, student housing, university buildings and hospitals. Working with a City of Seattle Department of Planning and Development (DPD) Advisory Committee, Joseph led an investigation to use wood in applications that go beyond current building codes. He has also been a jury member for wood design awards, served as Regional Associate Director for the American Institute of Architects (AIA), Young Architect Forum (YAF) Chair at AIA Seattle, and has assisted in teaching courses and served on architecture critiques at universities around the Pacific Northwest.

A comprehensive global tour of wood building systems.

Mayo's attempt to weave case studies of wood building systems from every corner of the world is astoundingly successful in convincing the architectural world of the approach's modernity and validity. He considers not just the environmental implications of the methods, but also the building code challenges, fire safety, structural considerations, and other critical topics in his analysis.

This book should be required-reading in any course on modern structural concepts or construction materials for architects and engineers.

Revived interest in wood construction

By boring deep into modern wood construction techniques, Joseph's Solid Wood piqued my interest as an opportunity to revisit architecture studies that I had enjoyed years ago during college classes. Joseph promptly covers critical issues of fire safety and moisture control as well as relevant terminology before moving on to several chapters of massive wood construction projects around the globe. Case studies in Norwegian Wood, budding United Kingdom housing developments, and Australia's timber down under all plant insight in the reader using ample construction photos and diagrams of project-specific techniques.

I worried this book would be overly technical when I placed a pre-order months ago; however, after receiving the book, I'm delighted to find the content appropriate for both a high level architecture class or a casual coffee table construction photo tome to thumb through.
