This is my favorite children's book series!

This whole series is my favorite for children. After reading a few from the library, I suggested to Nana that the whole series would be a perfect holiday gift for my then 2 and 4 year olds. I was not wrong! We have enjoyed these books for 3 years now and they remain my favorite children's books to read - so many rich words and clever use of the featured letter!

An Elusive Love Story within a Magical Mystery

I enjoyed this book so much! The magical world the author created was so detailed that I quickly forgot that thieves' guilds, mages, and magical water windows weren't things that existed in everyday life. The protagonist, Eleanor, is a very relatable character, which really draws you into this story and hypes up the tension at every turn. Cassandra is a dynamic mystery from her introduction, and it's no wonder that these two have so much chemistry. The story itself unravels so many secrets, and each one is just as intriguing as the next.

The magical drug war that this story centers around is also complicated and rich with history. Every time you seem to get an answer in this book, you end up with more questions. There's a lot of tension, and it doesn't let up until the end. Murder, kidnapping, betrayal, love, quick wits, high stakes – what more could you want from a book? Five stars from me!

Well-written book with an entertaining story and likable characters

Set in a world with three moons, it's about recently graduated mage Eleanor Reed, whose first mission appointed by the King’s Council is about to begin. It consists in infiltrating the Nightshade Brotherhood, the city's thieves' guild, along with an also recently graduated soldier so they can obtain proof of the guild's part in the distribution of a dangerous hallucinogenic drug.

While her partner, Ben, is tasked with posing as a thief, her role consists primarily of communicating with the Council through her magic when necessary, while hiding her powers from the thieves. However, during Ben's first assignment, she's discovered using magic by a mysterious woman, Cassandra, later revealed to be a member of the Brotherhood. In exchange for not telling anyone (which would result in their expulsion from the guild), Cassandra asks for Eleanor's help in a new mission, and so it begins!

What I really liked:

> I liked the 'feel' of the world, I could easily picture myself walking down the streets with them.

> The plot, although pretty simple (basically an undercover mission to get evidence of the Brotherhood's guiltiness) and predictable (with a few questions left in the air, or maybe conveniently overlooked), I found it very entertaining.

> The characters! Even secondary ones. I loved Cassandra. Something that annoys me when we're presented with "villains", or "bad people", is that sometimes in the end it turns out that they were only 'misunderstood', which I don't think happens here. Sure, they might not be as bad as their reputations, but they are criminals and it's not something they feel sorry about. I don't think there were any "black" or "white" characters, but a mix of both, or more like grey.

> I also liked the relationships between the characters, especially, of course, that between Eleanor and Cassandra, which I enjoyed seeing it develop. There is some romance, and it's an important aspect of their dynamic, but you do have to be patient, haha.

Now, now... the ending. I won't spoil anything, but it was really rushed and felt kind of incomplete. 80% into the book I found myself worried (looking almost frantically at the bottom right corner of the screen of my Kindle) there would not be enough time to end the story properly, and there wasn't, in my opinion. I just wish there would have been a few more pages. :

A must read for medical school interviews

Absolutely fantastic book. Because ethical dilemmas are never black and white, it can be difficult to know which direction is best. This book does a phenomenal job of breaking down many common ethical issues and tries to offer a few golden guidelines to handle most cases (but these guidelines do not apply in every case). Additionally, the book gives numerous scenarios to apply what has been learned to real world examples. I like to read the scenario and think about the ethical issues at hand. I then decide on what I would do before reading on. Overall fantastic book!!

I very good book

I enjoyed this for the very fact that I am not good at reacting to non believers questions about my faith and this book helped me so much I will read it a second time. It is very easy to follow as well and not many of the books like this are. I think it is a very good book.

Defense of icons

I ordered this book to help me write a paper on icons. It is very informative. It is the exact words of John of Damascus translated into English. The treaties tend to repeat each other because they were all written at different times. It defends the use of icons very well.

An informative and helpful book!

This is a wonderful book filled with extremely helpful information. The subtitle to the book is "Ask The Right Questions, Get The Right Answers."

First if you have never read one of Valorie Burtons' books, you must read one! This particular book would be a great start. The author takes some basic issues that pertain to every person's life. She then presents questions that you have probably asked yourself at one time or another. She answers those questions with practical advice along with spiritual direction.

Do you need encouragement to keep moving in life and work through a situation? What about help with procrastination? These and so many other subjects are address in the book with helpful tips to get you moving!

I gave this book 5/5 stars. I think it is a great book for all to read. If you want an easy to read book about simple ways to improve your life, this is the book for you.

I would like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for the copy of this book I enjoyed reading. I gave an honest review based on my opinion of what I read.

Soooo Helpful

I've always been a huge fan of Steven Covey's books, then I discovered Valorie Burton and I like hers as well. This must be my fourth or fifth book by her. I met her once in New York and she is the genuine article. Her words have a way of speaking to my deepest desires--even if I haven't yet acknowledged them--and encouraging them to blossom. What I like is the way she ties success to spirituality. We achieve so much more when we focus intentionally and spiritually on a goal. Whenever I begin a challenging new project or want to turn over a new leaf, I find myself reaching for one of her guides on my shelf, or, checking out her latest one. If I'm having a tough day or a setback, a few pages of her wisdom is how I get back on track. Today I was seeking to renew my courage to let go of the something "safe" that is keeping me too busy to pursue something "amazing." Read p. 152 I'm going for it. Thanks again Valorie for always delivering the encouragement I need to keep pursuing my souls goal's. Highly recommend this author if you like self help/motivation. And this book is great because you literally can dip into it 5 minutes at a time and take away the energy and momentum to move yourself forward. The only disappointing thing about this book is that there is limited space to fill in answers to the questions. I have a little notebook that I use with it instead--which actually works better because I plan on sharing this book with my sister and coworker when I'm done.

About the Author
Gary Klein, PhD, a senior scientist at MacroCognition LLC, was instrumental in founding the field of naturalistic decision making. Dr. Klein received his PhD in experimental psychology from the University of Pittsburgh in 1969. He spent the first phase of his career in academia and the second phase working for the government as a research psychologist for the U.S. Air Force. The third phase, in private industry, started in 1978 when he founded Klein Associates, a research and development company that had grown to thirty-seven employees by the time he sold it in 2005. He is the author of Sources of Power: How People Make Decisions; The Power of Intuition; Working Minds: A Practitioner's Guide to Cognitive Task Analysis (with Beth Crandall and Robert Hoffman); and Streetlights and Shadows: Searching for the Keys to Adaptive Decision Making. Inspired by Martin Seligman and other positive psychologists, Gary Klein turned away from studying errors in decision making and focused on how experts like firefighters solve problems successfully. He is most interested in how we have and use insights. "When we put too much energy into eliminating mistakes, we're less likely to gain insights. Having insights is a different matter from preventing mistakes."

Klein began by observing instances of creative problem solving that did not fit the accepted four-stage model of creativity consisting of preparation, incubation, illumination, and verification (from economist Graham Wallas' 1926 The Art of Thought). He also saw important differences between the lab experiments and unfamiliar problems used to study problem solving and the real-life insights of experienced professionals working in their areas of expertise. Klein started from scratch, collecting his own set of critical incidents and examining them for patterns. He was careful to include instances of failed insight as well as instances of success.

Klein concluded that we achieve insights by reorganizing our thinking into a new story about the problem we are trying to solve. His model highlights the importance of five factors in achieving insights. "Eventually I was able to sort these 120 cases into five different strategies for gaining insights: connections, coincidences, curiosities, contradictions, and creative desperation. Did the incident rely on a person making a connection? Did the person notice a coincidence as a trigger for the insight? Was the insight triggered by some curiosity-- an odd fact or event? Did it depend on seeing a contradiction? Or was the person stuck, desperately seeking some way out of an impasse?"

The first section of the book describes Klein's research methods and how each of the five factors was identified. It also debunks common beliefs about problem solving. For example, an incubation period is unnecessary for creative insight, reasoning by analogy is productive when it involves an expert applying analogies from previously-solved problems, and computational models of searching a problems space to choose between possible solutions do not match how human experts think.

The final two sections describe how insights are often blocked and what can be done to facilitate insightful problem solving. Most interesting is Chapter 12: How Organizations Obstruct Insights." It discusses how the high value many organizations place on predictability and reduction of errors discourages risk-taking and pursuing new strategies. "Insight is the opposite of predictable. Insights are disruptive. They come without warning, take forms that are unexpected, and open up unimagined opportunities. Insights get in the way of progress reviews because they reshape tasks and even revise goals. They carry risks-- unseen complications and pitfalls that can get you in trouble. So insights make you work harder." Another nugget is Klein's tongue-in-cheek list of methods to block insight. If you have a distaste for arbitrary deadlines and other organizational nonsense, you will find it enjoyable as well as useful.

This is a useful discussion of the nature of insight and how to recognize and foster it. It strikes a good balance between research depth and practical application. Researchers will also find it useful for Klein's candid discussion of this methods and the value of a naturalistic approach to studying decision making. Exposes Some Hypocrisy

I always wondered why it took so long for the human race to put wheels on luggage. Cognitive psychologist Klein unravels this conundrum and the more important need to more effectively solve problems and get things done. It is amazing how little we know about insights, how they are formed or what prevents them from being found. I love what Klein does for a living...observing people in their natural setting and unraveling the behavior behind their motivations and their abilities. The examples will entertain and educate. I both laughed and shook my head when he exposes businesses for their hypocritical stance of promoting creativity and innovation all the while blocking new ideas and playing it safe. There are plenty of lessons for individuals and organizations who have open minds and who recognize the need to do away with unhealthy biases.

While referee's have better insight than those in the stands

Very academic in style, meaning a broad examination of others' stories, without any meaningful personal stories on insight. While referee's have better insight than those in the stands, I'd prefer coaching from a player. I'll concede his diagnosis of how corporate CYA does not encourage pursuit of insights was spot on, there was not enough practical guidance to make this worth the effort. Interesting stories and a good structure around it, but like so many of these types of books, leaves the reader without the last mile of making it useful.
