The Corruption in Faulkner County Sheriff’s Department is Shocking.

Very few people want to accept that corruption exists in their home town sheriff’s department. In the minds of most law abiding folks, corruption is far off in some other sheriff’s department. Very few people want to believe that someone they know and see on a regular basis is corrupt.

The biggest case of corruption I knew about and still know about is a cold case murder of an innocent girl from Greenbrier, Arkansas. Her name is Pamela Felkins of Greenbrier, Arkansas is Greenbrier is the second largest city in Faulkner County, Arkansas. I live there.

Back in February of 1990, Pamela Faye Felkins, a mother in her 30’s with a husband and children, was working the closing shift at a video rental store in Greenbrier. She was abducted, incessantly tortured, brutally raped and finally after 3 hours killed by numerous blows to her head with a tire iron and a knife stick. Her body was dumped in a roadside landfill.

The case was worked well by law enforcement. Evidence was recovered and taken to the Faulkner County Sheriff’s Office by the FBI. The evidence was then supposed to be transferred to the Arkansas Crime Lab in Little Rock. It never arrived at the crime lab.

Members of the Pamela Faye Felkins task force kept pestering the Faulkner County Sheriff’s Office about sending the evidence, which consisted of a bloody mattress, carpet fibers and other items were from the location of the torture and rape scene. The kill scene was along the roadside next to where her body was dumped. It is a heart wrenching story. It make grown men I know cry, tough old cops.

The case was solved and presented to a certain prosecutor, who refused to sign an arrest warrant for the one who was known to be one of the two perpetrators. The criminal investigators, who presented the case to the prosecutor, thought at the time, that the Arkansas Crime Lab already had the remaining evidence. It did not and to this day, still, does not possess that evidence.

Good cops have soft hearts; bad ones have hearts of stone.

Very interesting to get incite from retired cop, who has been on both sides of the law. Owning up to your own mistakes in the process is a good life lesson learned.

I was a little disappointed that the book didn't go deeper into the corruption

I found the book to be very honest and open. I have no doubt that something fishy is going on within the seat of that county government; I was a little disappointed that the book didn't go deeper into the corruption, but seen the author is writing a second book that will cover that. I'm looking forward to buying and reading that one as well. This is a funny story, and you have to laugh about the pay back prank the author pulled.

I thought this was going to give me insight on the corruption going on in the county, instead it was about your days locked up. You should have titled it "a dummies guide to serving 30 days in the pen." But I did manage to read the whole thing.

Nobody's Home

Nobody’s Home by Dev Bentham is a leisurely paced romance between two men who unexpectedly find love in the midst of personal upheaval. Jonas is looking for a new beginning when he impulsively accepts a job in Lacland. Nick has reluctantly returned to Laclan to settle his long estranged father’s estate. They indulge in an anonymous hookup but when their paths later cross their attraction for one another is undeniable but will their unresolved pasts destroy their future?

Nick and Jonas are perfect for each other but neither is emotionally ready for a relationship. Jonas is fresh out of a long term relationship and he also has some self-esteem issues to work through. Nick is trying to make sense of his father’s mental illness as he deals with funeral arrangements and settles his dad’s estate. Agreeing that a romantic entanglement is unwise, Nick and Jonas instead agree to a friends’ only relationship.

While there is a romantic element to Nobody’s Home, it is mainly a journey of self-discovery and starting over for both Nick and Jonas. The chapters alternate between Jonas and Nick’s viewpoints and it is not until the second half of the novel that their lives fully converge. Both men are quite contemplative as they reflect on their respective pasts but the biggest obstacle standing between them are Nick’s future plans. This part of the storyline takes the longest to play out, but the realistic resolution is well worth the wait.

Nobody’s Home is an absolutely delightful story with superbly developed protagonists, adorable dogs and a wonderfully unique storyline. Dev Bentham tackles a difficult subject with sensitivity and shines a much needed light on an often misunderstood mental illness. Another magnificent romance by a very gifted storyteller that I highly recommend to fans of this genre.

I liked it

BOOK WAS A KINDLE LOAN FROM A FRIEND

I read several other works by this writer and while I had some issues, I really liked her writing. This story is no exception in a sense that I liked the writing, but it also worked for me in a strange way. I would say that at least for the half of the story Nick's and Jonas' stories run separately and the story is not that long - it says 148 pages, but I long time ago learned to distrust Amazon's page count. It felt a bit shorter just by how fast I read it, but I read really fast, so who knows maybe it was indeed 148 pages. In any event what I am trying to say that I was getting irritated that I do not see Nick and Jonas' together getting a lot of the page time, so how we would see them believably falling in love with each other?

But strangely enough every time they met, I kind of felt that it was important for them, even though the first meeting was the casual encounter. The second meeting in the vet clinic was even more important and gave them reasons to keep meeting. Well, there was also an attraction of course, but I got a feeling from the book that the romance unfolded slowly even if probably less time passed for real than what I thought. Neither of the guys are ready for a committed relationship when they meet, but I loved watching how they slowly realized that maybe they were more ready than they thought. I loved how they seemed to realize that despite negative things that they experinced, maybe what they may have seems worth working at.

It was really well done come to think of it. And there are dogs in there!

Much better than Painting in the Rain. With this book the story is a bit more cohesive and the characters come across as believable. Good character development and the promise of a HEA.

Beautifully Photographed Reference

This book did not disapoint. The uniforms are often full page, clear, and are wonderfully photographed. A big and somewhat chilling surprise was one of Hitlers 1935 NSDAP party shirts, complete with belt, strap, and medals; found by US soldiers in his Munich apartment. My only complaint was that there were no uniforms complete with matching pants and boots. Having one of Hitlers garments included also begged the question if there are other uniforms of top officials still in existence such as Goering, Himmler, or other Reich or Field Marshalls. The book gives little reference or hint of the extent of such historical items existing either in private hands or museums.

Not a great reference source.

Based on the write-up for this book, I assumed that it would have photographs of various WW2-era uniforms that would help a collector know what to look for when it came to authentic/original items. Well if you can afford to buy or could actually find uniforms that belonged to Erwin Rommel or some Navy Admiral or a Knight's Cross winner, this is the book for you. If you collect uniforms for historical purposes for the average foot soldier of any of the services, this isn't the book for you. There were numerous photos of uniforms for Generals, high-ranking officers, and some ultra rare SS uniforms. However, there were very, very, few photographs of common uniforms that would belong to anyone below an officer rank. The Navy section had 7 different reefer jackets pictured, but not a single enlisted uniform was pictured. How many reefer jackets do you need to see? There were no standard enlisted army wool tunics pictured. This book basically is a visual display of some of the very best pieces from some great collections. However, it's use as a reference source for collecting purposes is very limited. I was very disappointed....

Great book, but too many photos of one item

First of all, this book is really impressive. Its a massive
volume and I enjoyed reading (or looking) very much. The photos
are very clear and show a lot of close ups. However, I felt that,
in such a large book, some more uniforms should have been
described. For example there is a large section on just one Army
officers set, too large for my taste. Apart from that, great book

Now in its fourth edition, Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me strikes fear in cosmetics-counter consultants everywhere. First off, Begoun has deconstructed ingredient lists. Ever wonder what methylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben are doing in your mascara? And what is diazolidinyl urea? All four are potential irritants, and the latter is a preservative that can release formaldehyde, a class A carcinogen. Buyer beware.

Begoun also lists which companies are cruelty-free and which continue to conduct animal testing. All though this is a great tool. I find you need to take it not too literal as she makes great suggestions, like to the chemical make up of the product and suggestions are great for oily dry ect.... However you need to know your own skin and allergies can play a big role in these products. I have found her suggestions work on some while others not so much . Another thing to Consider as an example of different products in her book. Example; mascara reviews.....I like long dark lashes ,most of her suggestions I didn't like. Why although they have the right components they flake even if it says they don't. Hmmm why? Because you have to look at your own skin and oils if you get too oily in the duration of the day as a whole it could bleed the mascara around the eyes. Also do to my allergies it can make my eyes itch ...if they itch FYI your allergic in my experience. And most of the ones suggested didn't lengthen and darken my eyes . For me it's trial and error and possibly compromise to get what I'm looking for. Mainly listen to what your face is saying . Hope this helps & God Bless

A disappointing book

I got the edition of 1996, knowing it wasn't going to be up to date with the things I could buy in the stores in 2012. I hoped she was going to explain to me why should I prefer this or avoid that always from the point of view that we are not all the same and what causes a terrible allergic reaction to somebody, could be my best cosmetic friend (in the same way that I have a friend alergic to fish, but that doesn't make fish bad for me). Instead I found something like a religion: "do it because I said so".

The deal breaker was when reviewing makeup, she used her tastes and prejudices about colors to evaluate products: I can't trust she's not doing the same when it's not a matter of taste, for example when discussing potentially dangerous ingredients. Most of the public talk about cosmetics is not based on facts, but beliefs ("n women saw improvements": do people around them saw those improvements as well?): if Paula can't separate her beliefs from facts, then she's not better than the big cosmetic brands and her book is not for me.

Former sceptic of book turns into huge fan

Firstly, I am a total nut when it comes to my skin care. For a very long time I suffered severe cystic acne. Due to that I have developed an intense interest in all things beauty-related and read just about every bit of information on products that I can get my hands on, always thinking I could see through the beauty industry hype. I guess I was wrong...

I first saw this book a couple of years ago but didn't buy it. I looked through it in the shop and checked out her reviews for products that I was using. She had horrible reviews on just about all of them. I was thinking 'How can she say this about my skin care? These are good brands!?! WTF!'

In December, my local library had a copy of Paula Begouns 'The Original Beauty Bible: Skin Care Facts For Ageless Beauty' on the new arrivals. So I figured I may as well borrow it, it's free after all...

Having now read the Original Beauty Bible I now understand why she criticises certain #most# items. And these criticisims are for such obvious faults that you wonder why you never gave certain things much of a thought - air tight packaging over jars, alcohol free products, ingredients proven to work not just fad ingredients, whether a study on an ingredient or product has been done independently.

As a former sceptic of this book, I am glad I gave it a second chance. I love this book and now refer to it every time I buy a new product. While I fully take into consideration her opinions when it comes to ingredients, formula and packaging I still use my own views to decide if I want to purchase items or not. As I am using up my current skincare I am moving onto things that are her recommendations and so far, she is soooooo right with her product picks. After just switching cleansers I am noticing a difference. My skin can only keep improving....

READ THE BOOK NOT THE MOVIE

Honestly by far this is one of the best books I've ever read. Matthew Quick is a sensational author who perfectly captures not only the Philadelphia Eagles fan's lifestyle, but also the lifestyle of a bipolar person. He understood what most bp would feel in certain moments and was able to perfectly display it in his book. I hate to be "that guy" but if you've only seen the movie I beg you to read the book. I get that they aren't able to put every single thing from the book into the movie but really they completely changed the ending because of some of the things they did in this book.
WARNING SPOILERS
1. Nikki isn't supposed to show up to the dance, also there was no bet put in place for them to win
2. At the dance, all the other dancers were supposed to stink and pat/ tif were supposed to get an excellent score
3. Pat was supposed to meet up with Nikki in Philadelphia but would only find Tiffany there explaining that she wrote the letters
4. He's supposed to meet up with his friend Danny after he runs away from Tiffany in Philadelphia, he is found with a broken leg.
5. After all this he realizes he does love Tiffany.

The only reason I'm complaining so much about this is because it really ruined the movie, it was still amazing acted and produced but the plot became more of a common ending. If they went with the books ending not only would the plot be completely different but you'd also be more interested. You wouldn't have known the first 2 hours of watching it that Tiffany was writing all the letters, and you would have thought that there were no silver linings because of what just happened and then you would have been surprised again when pat does love Tiffany after Nikki never shows up...... In the book Nikki never actually sees pat

Main character simplistic, but that's the charm

I bought this book after watching the movie. This book is not really like the film, but it resonates the same slow, torturous romance between two people who have many problems. While some readers have complained that no psychologist would behave the way the one in the book does, that's OK. It's fiction. The fact of the matter is you have two social misfits who have had some real trauma in their lives that find one another. One knows right away she should be with him, but he, on the other hand, has traumatic brain injury (way late in the book do they mention this) and has a fixation on his ex-wife that he doesn't even know is an ex. Bless the author for creating a deeply loving mother willing to go out on a limb and take a chance bringing her son home so he can regain his life. This is a hopeful book and a story everyone should read.

Just so real...

This book is just real and at the same time hopeful. It's the idea that we all can struggle and get damaged, and yet with the support of even just a few sincere and loving people we can get through the worst and scariest parts of life and still be ok - and just accept ourselves and others for whatever they are and whatever they're able to be for us. I read this in one day because I couldn't bear to put it down -- just read this book! The story and style are spellbinding.
