About the Author

Michael S. Nystulreceived his Ph.D. in counseling from Oregon State University in 1974. He holds the position of Professor Emeritus in the Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology at New Mexico State University. Professor Nystul is a licensed psychologist and school psychologist. He has worked in a variety of clinical settings such as schools, hospitals, community mental health centers, university counseling centers, and private practice. His first position was an elementary and middle school counselor with the Bureau of Indian Affairs in 1970. He continues to be active in the counseling field and currently provides counseling and psychological services in private practice in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Professor Nystul has more than 100 publications, including journal articles, book chapters, and books to his credit. He has three daughters, five grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and relies on his wife, Laura, to maintain a sense of balance in life.

Good book, unique and an interesting project to program

I would say this is a very good book for a beginner. It has many very good reverences and explains everything fairly clearly. You don't really have to understand the code initially in order to compile and install the rather unique Tic Tac Toe game that the book describes and, is in fact the project of the book. The reason is that all the code is downloadable from a site described in the book and, as the Android Studio compiler is free (the link is in the book also). One can copy the code into the compiler and have a working app in a few days (counting for a few glitches along the way). But that is not the end. The book goes on to show how one to publish a finished product, assuming you go further than just the example in the book. Having said all of that, I do want to point out the at the author goes to some length to explain what the code does and explores other aspects like calling web services and using SQL. Though it would help to have some computer and programming knowledge (especially for debugging), I am sure any one could learn to compile this project with a bit of effort.

I Really Liked and Enjoyed the Material Provided In This Book

Well I must say that I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I got this book. Was it going to be to technical or was it going to be mostly in layman's terms and easy to understand. Surprisingly it is a little of both, but lends itself to be more in the layman's terms in my opinion and much easier to read and understand. I haven't actually started making an app yet, but it is something that I do want to do for a variety of reasons, and this book has been a really big help in laying down the basics in order to get started and really fleshes it out step-by-step in order to make the process simple to understand and just as simple to implement. I plan or reading through this book at least one more time before I actually start the process of building an app in order to hopefully make the process simpler. However, that usually is not the case for me and I end up doing it a couple of times in order to get it down right, and that is why having this book as a reference is going to make things so much easier.

Ed Burnette's "Hello, Android: Introducing Google's Mobile Development Platform, 4th edition" is a well written and well-paced primer on writing for the Android platform. It does not make assumptions that the reader has worked with Android previously, but does assume prior knowledge of the Java programming language. Basic concepts specific to Android, such as the application life-cycle, are covered. As is usual, the code is available online so as to reduce the amount of typing needed. The book covers Android versions 4.1 (Jelly Bean) through the current 5 (Lollipop). Those looking for features specific to Android phones (as opposed to tablets), such as telephony, will need to supplement this book with additional reference material. The book is nicely formatted and well organized, and provides clear illustrations.

A Great Book

This book was much nicer and better than I was expecting, so I am extremely happy with it. I plan to copy some of the recipes, then give the book to my daughter for Christmas. She and her husband both have first names beginning with M, and we kid them about being the "M&M's," so the book will be a perfect gift.
Highly recommend this book.

This is a fun cookbook. My 8 year old son saw it at a book fair at his school. We found it much cheaper through Amazon and he just loves helping us cook from this book.

Cute ideas

It's more of a book of creative ideas than a real cookbook although it does offer recipes. The recipes themselves I found to be the basic stuff most bakers already make. It's full of colorful pictures, which should attract a youngster's interest in learning more.

Julien Lange

Julien Lange is a 34-year-old IT expert in software engineering. He started developing on an Amstrad CPC464 with the BASIC language when he was 7 years old. He later learned Visual Basic 3/4, then VB.NET, and then C#. For several years until the end of his education, he developed and maintained several e-business websites based on PHP and ASP.NET. After his graduation, he continued to learn more and more about software, which included software architecture and project management, and always tried to acquire new skills. Since 2011, he has been working as an IT project manager on the lead management middleware of DSI Axa France (a French insurance company). This middleware is based on the SOA architecture. As this middleware is consumed by frontend users exposed on the Internet, performance is the top priority each time he delivers a new release of the system. Scalability and robustness are really important in his everyday work. He first developed an interest in mobile development in 2009. After discovering the massive potential of iPhone games and software, he decided to find an improved game engine, which would allow him to concentrate only on the main purpose of a game: developing a game and not a game engine. His choice was Unity 3D. Later, he took some time to learn the native iOS Objective-C language, which was quite difficult for him due to its language particularity and finally learned Swift since its first apparition in 2014. In addition to his main work as an IT consultant, he created iXGaming.com in December 2010. He currently has several projects in mind, including a game based on a French board game and a new website that delivers new services to developers. He is searching for a few partners to work with.

Appalling. Really, just… appalling.

This book verges on the surreal in its awfulness. It reads like a 1982 VCR manual translated from Japanese into English by a native speaker of Italian. Truly - nearly every paragraph has some terrible linguistic convolution stunning in its cluelessness. Imagine 2001's HAL, had he been an autistic child. The author thinks nothing of beginning any number of successive sentences with the same words and seems to regard all articles and conjunctions as interchangeable. Misspellings, typos, syntax & tense errors, and word misusage all abound. The result is a droning, bizarrely robotic glossolalia overflowing with numbing repetition punctuated by strange quirks and distractions, all of which achieves the goal of rendering an already esoteric subject opaque.

Nor does the ugliness stop there. The ebook includes delights such as entire pages with a single sentence and other layout disasters that suggest a computer generated text untouched by any human being. Vast expanses of white space interrupt the text; perhaps half the pages are more than half blank. It appears to be a draft website or classroom presentation dumped to text. Printed, there'd be enough room to write an entirely new (and one hopes, better) text in the white space provided.

Perhaps the author is a non-native speaker of English, but that in no way excuses the publisher for releasing this half-baked abortion. One can only assume Packt employs no editors and vetted this shameful mess not at all.
