This encyclopedia joins Bohdan S. Wynan's Dictionary of American Library Biography (Professional Reading, LJ 9/1/78) and Donald G. Davis Jr.'s American Library History: A Comprehensive Guide to the Literature (Professional Reading, LJ 3/ 1/90) as essential reference tools for the study of library history. It is, however, much broader in scope, both geographically and chronologically. Edited by two prominent U.S. library historians, the volume contains articles by more than 200 contributors from three dozen countries. The work is organized in a standard one-volume encyclopedia format with alphabetically arranged articles, cross references, brief bibliographies, and a detailed index. The essays are basically of two types: geographical and subject. The geographical articles survey libraries in particular countries or regions. They also profile more than 50 major libraries worldwide. A small sample of the great variety of entries includes: Hans H. Wellisch's "Alexandrian Library"; Mary Niles Maack's "Gender Issues in Librarianship"; and Ellis Mount's "Scientific and Technical Libraries." International in scope and covering library history from Babylonian clay tablets to MEDLINE, the articles here range from 200 to 6,000 words. The emphasis is on the historical, but there is much information on libraries in the present day. There is a wonderful article on the history of the concept of alphabetical order, along with interesting entries on the Anglo-American Cataloging Code, subject headings, OCLC, gays and lesbians, gender and racial issues in library history, and USIA libraries. The longer entries tend to be on types of libraries (Medical Libraries, Theological Libraries), library functions (Reference Services, Collection Development), or historical periods (Medieval Libraries). There are entries for 60 important libraries around the world, some of which, such as the American Antiquarian Society and the Boston Public Library, are not in the new third edition of the World Encyclopedia of Library and Information Services [RBB Ja 1 94]. All articles are signed by their authors, who represent many different countries, and all conclude with bibliographies. Finding aids in the Encyclopedia of Library History include a classified list of articles at the beginning of the book and an index at the end.

How else does this work differ from the World Encyclopedia? Its more than 80 articles on countries of the world are briefer and lack the useful statistics found in the World Encyclopedia, and it lacks the biographies and photographs found in that volume. While it doesn't entirely take the place of the larger World Encyclopedia, it does provide some of the same information. It also has some unique entries, such as Library Literature, Library Philanthropy, Library Staffing Patterns, Library Statistics, and Library Surveys. Sandy Whiteley

Numbers and psychology: Two things that rule the world and a book that addresses both!

Such an interesting and fun read, which I'm both a math/numbers nerd and a psychology geek... Finding something that hits both ends of the spectrum while not making it feel like a textbook, well - It certainly deserves 5/5 from me. I am not yet done with the read, as I actually am reading a handful of things but I did lose a full day reading this when originally only planned to read first few pages to get a feel for it then return to another psychology book I was reading.

Dont bother after reading freakonomics

Bought this after looking at all of the great reviews and expecting to be enlightneted as I was after reading Freakonmics, however, this book only touched on a handful of topics, and when it did, it just repeated itself over and over. Seemed like the book was 2, maybe 3 times longer than it should/could have been. Also, the few things that he did cover (airplane crashes, steroid using cheats, state loterry chances & cheats, traffic congestion perseception and fact, etc) seemed to be very far from ruling my world.

I must confess I had higher expectations from this book coming from the reviews and the title. I thought it should give more in depth information about different strategies on statistics and less story telling. I wanted to read a book about statistics with some stories backing up the facts, not long stories about hurricane disasters in Florida and different ways athletes can dope themselves.

Well, after reading two great books on statistics: "Predictive Analytics" and "Super Crunchers" I have only one word to describe Numbers Rule Your World:

Average.

A charming third installment.

The Wedding Wallah by Farahad Zama is the third book of a series (starting with The Marriage Bureau for Rich People) set in my hometown, Vizag. No one ever writes books set in Vizag, so this fact alone almost guarantees that I'd love these books. However, they're also actually pretty well-written, have great characters, and more importantly, they have a lot of heart. They remind me a lot of the The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency books by Alexander McCall Smith - slow and somewhat sleepy, but not boring.

Anyway, enough about the series. The Wedding Wallah sees all of our favourite characters return: Mr. and Mrs. Ali's marriage bureau is still doing brisk business, Rehman has still not been cured of his idealism, Pari is still determined to be an independent young woman and Aruna is fully settled into her marriage, although she still helps out at the marriage bureau. We are introduced to a new character, Dilawar, who is from a wealthy and aristocratic family, but hasn't found a bride yet. His family, for whatever reason, believes that the relatively poor Pari would be a good bride for him, despite her widowed status and adopted son. Meanwhile the Naxalites (terrorists with communist ideologies) are growing increasingly active in the villages surrounding Vizag. Intertwined with these are a few stories from the marriage bureau side of things. And of course, people are falling in love all over the place.

The book is as charming as previous installments, and it left me wanting more, immediately. I'm not sure how much this has to do with my excitement whenever a place I know is mentioned (which happens a lot.) I was especially excited when the bookstore that I bought the book from was mentioned as a place that one of the characters bought books from!

I thought the Naxalite plot was a little too dramatic in comparison with the rest of the book; it was a little jarring. However, it still made sense. I think that these book really do capture Vizag very well. The only flaw that I can find is that the people sometimes seem too idealistic. This book is also slightly more racy than the other books, which was fine, but a tiny bit unexpected. I was also glad that the book addressed a few modern issues - the Naxalites are portrayed fairly, showing both the bad and the good, and I thought that the inclusion of gay rights in India was also a nice touch and a nice nod to the recent decriminalisation of homosexuality.

I'm just frustrated that I don't live in the UK, since that's the only way I can pre-order the next book on Amazon!

The Marriage Bureau adventures continue. . .

"The Wedding Wallah" was a lovely book that builds on the previous two installments in the series. Mr Zama has a talent for writing simply and clearly about India and its people and customs and the pressing social issues of the day. Over the course of the series, I have fallen in love with the Ali family, Aruna and her family and Pari and her adopted son Vasu. In this book, we are introduced to Dilawar, an old friend of Rehman, and a potential bridegroom for Pari. Dilawar is in love with a young man though and afraid to expose himself to condemnation from the society that he lives in. He is a wonderful addition to the storyline and I hope he will be a regular in the series. Along with the tales of Indian matchmaking, Mr. Zama returns to the country to examine the struggle between the poor farmers and big agricultural interests and then introduces us to a group of guerrillas that believe in kidnapping and causing mayhem in order to bring attention to their cause. It is here that I found that the transition from the business of love to the business of guerrilla warfare a bit jarring. The series until now was also quite innocent and left quite a bit to the imagination, however with the addition of the guerrillas, Aruna is placed into two different situations which (if this were a movie) would change the rating from "G" to "PG" or maybe "R". In some ways, "The Wedding Wallah" is like two different books. One of the books moves along slowly and sweetly and the other is just a bit too hectic. I did enjoy the resolution though and felt that the book went back on track once the guerilla story was resolved. In conclusion, it's a great book, just a little convoluted in parts. I'm hoping for another book in the series very soon and *I wish that Mrs. Ali would continue her writing exercises--they are delightful and informative.*

Everyday life in India

Mr Ali's marriage bureau is flourishing. His assistant, Aruna is about to take a break with her husband Ram and Pari - a cousin of Mr Ali's is going to take over from her for a time because she has lost her own job in a call centre. Pari lives opposite Mr and Mrs Ali and has an adopted son. She has received a proposal of marriage from a wealthy man which she is considering. As a widow she can choose her own marriage partner.

As other reviewers have mentioned this third book in the series covers much darker themes - the activities of a group of terrorists, the Naxilites, and the lack of acceptance of homosexuality in India. There are still many amusing incidents and a focus on the good aspects of human nature. Women look after sick relatives and put the family's interests before their own. Maybe some people seem too selfless to our Western eyes but it is not that long since women in the West would have been expected to exhibit the same behaviour.

I liked the way Mrs Ali is still working behind the scenes when she considers it necessary to influence the way things are going. People who read the first book in the series The Marriage Bureau for Rich People will recall the way she presented Aruna to Mr Ali as a suitable assistant. I also liked the insight this series gives into life in India today. People have mobile phones and computers but many aspects of their lives might seem primitive to Western eyes. Mrs Ali drying tamarinds and tomatoes in the sun seems odd to us as well as unhygienic. But there is something warm and friendly about the society these books portray and I always think that I can smell, hear and see everyday life when I read these books.

About the Author
Saeed Vaseghi is Professor of Communications and Signal Processing at Brunel University’s Department of Electronics and Computer Engineering and is Group Leader for the Communications & Multimedia Signal Processing Group. Previously, Saeed obtained a first in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Newcastle University, and a PhD in Digital Signal Processing from Cambridge University.
His PhD in noisy signal restoration led to establishment of CEDAR, the world's leading system for restoration of audio signals. Saeed also held a British Telecom lectureship at UEA Norwich, and a readership at Queen's University of Belfast before his move to Brunel.

Wait for the next edition

I really like the presentation and the structure, but the typos must be fixed. Reading the reviews of the authors' other books, I see the problem is endemic. I think this book is fine for getting the general idea, but I advise exercising caution for people who want to implement the algorithms using the formulas provided. Be sure to check them for mistakes first.

Like John Allen Paulos's Beyond Numeracy (LJ 4/1/91), this is an A-to-Z collection of mathematical essays. The advantage of this format is that it lets the author hit the highlights in essays that can be read independently. This collection is less cantankerous than Paulos's, and it is also somewhat more focused and mathematically challenging, though still written for a popular audience. Dunham (Journey Through Genius: The Great Theorems of Mathematics, Wiley, 1990) is winner of the 1993 George Polya Award for excellence in math writing, an honor he richly deserves. He is fascinated by the nature of mathematical genius, and the theme of these essays is the personality and eccentricities of mathematicians and the brilliance of their discoveries. For sophisticated readers who don't mind equations (including algebra, geometry, and calculus), this is a rewarding and entertaining look at the history of mathematics.

Great for the masses, but not for math people

This is my least favorite Dunham book, and not because it is for the non-math masses.

This book does not really seem to have any real organization to it as his other works. And his writing is targeted to appeal to the pedestrian reader he tries a bit hard to be amusing.

It almost seems that Dunham is out of his comfort zone trying to write for the masses and not turn people off with the math.

Yes there is the math in the book, but it really is nothing of interest to the math student or math types. Unlike Journey through Genius, where he does not seem to worry about whether he lost the average reader and writes more towards the math crowd who want the math and historical.

In his other works he really does a great job of presenting the topics in a cohesive manner which develops the context and almost tells a story. In this book the organization is almost random.

The 5 stars is because for the masses, this is an easy read and hopefully will entice readers to really go back and at least try to develop a deeper understanding of math.

Also, Dunham does have his favorites and he makes that clear in his books. Everyone will have their favorites in a subject so broad with such a long history of great discovery.

Enjoyable, but Kindle version in a pretty bad state.

Enjoyable as a quick dip into a range of different fields of mathematics. Unfortunately, the Kindle version suffers from many, many typos misformatting in the mathematical equations. In some cases they are completely illegible, and the reader is left to guess what a symbol was supposed to have been.

Required but not used

This book was required for a college math class. It was completely useless. Not worth purchasing AT ALL. It is all about he history of math. Holds no valuable information in actually performing math.

This class was a college algebra math class. Therefore, we learned NOTHING about the history. A complete waste of money.
