New Relevance in an Age of Terror

If you've read Mimesis and Alterity (Mimesis and Alterity: A Particular History of the Senses) you're already somewhat operantly conditioned to Taussig's brilliant, Kafkaesque (one of his frequent idols), and frustrating prose. Like the hybrid text/story it's intended to be, it can be skimmed, read or studied. If you think it will be "just one" of those, you'll likely give up as taking too much time and energy.

But there is a new value to Taussig's insights that needs to be noticed by anyone concerned with the terrorist use of Ebola, ISIL and other violent turmoil against governments and systems. There are numerous really good books out on the conditioning and coercion of terrorist recruits, and even some on how their "societies work" -- some including devaluing children and oppressing women in a way that is recursively mimetic to the "barbaric" civilizations that are considered "primitive."

If you love order when reading history-- ala Will Durant-- with page turning insights and outstanding prose, you might want to pass on this. Yet, I love Durant, and am a frequent anonymous contributor to hack terror dot org being in IT and robotics, and there are numerous relevant lessons to be learned in this book that are not adequately covered in the programming/deprogramming books about terrorist recruiting and methods.

As an example, paraphrasing Taussig quoting Kafka, we too often think we know everything once we know anything. Mistaking the social, cultural and political aspects of terrorist conditioning is like that; skimming the surface due to immediate needs, missing the depths, and thereby creating unexpected, unforseen consequences via superficial intervention. Hack terror has a whole section on what that network calls "mimetic recursion" and "mimetic inception," Being a 2015 version of Taussig's "automata." It is modern computing and social networks meet revolution-- and how old male dominated clergy manages to co-opt young males. Am I talking about the year 1,000 or the year 3,000? That's how relevant this book really is, IF you're willing to invest the time to work through the style. NOT a "page turner" in any sense! BUT... if you like puzzles... CAN be VERY enjoyable too.

The Nervous System

While Michael Taussig's The Nervous System addresses an important, often overlooked issue -- the terrors of social control in the modern world -- his essays are obscure and difficult to read. He is guilty of a stream of consciousness writing style that does not converge to make a coherent argument. This reader wanted to learn more about the political chaos of Latin American nations, but instead got an eyeful of the author's images and musings that were not directly linked to the main thesis. Suprisingly, the book's most moving parts are the anecdotes that informs thte reader that terror exists in the United States, in supposedly civlized areas. For while we may dismiss genocide and political disappearances in other countries, how can we justify the economic and social oppression, and elimnation, of American blacks? This book get two stars for covering a sensitive topic, but when it comes to readablity, gets a zero (unless you like Walter Benjamin and the postmodernist, unfocused style).

Excellent, Well Thought Out Book on An Important Topic

This book is important and topical, with the FATCA law moving toward implementation.

Reality is, the wealthy tax evaders, corporations, drug dealers and other criminals are running amuck throughout the world right now in a variety of tax havens too numerous to count. This excellent book acts like a skeleton key to a variety of topics too numerous to completely describe in this short book.

As the noose begins to tighten on the unpatriotic, vile people who think they are above the law, this book provides a ring side seat to the game plan that the world's responsible democracies will follow as the evil of tax evasion is hounded out of existence. This will be among the hardest chores ever attempted, as the wealthy have decided that they are above the law and have the right to enjoy all the benefits of living in a civilized society without paying for it. But, they are deluded if they think they can get away with it forever. One by one, these tax havens, secrecy jurisdictions and other facilitators of the multi-trillion-dollar/euro/eurodollar/petrodollar underground banking system will be cornered and exterminated like the vermin they are. They may think they can escape but that is hubris in the extreme. After all, this is a tiny world and--as this book so eloquently describes--you can run but you can't hide.

I think this is the first book I've ever purchased that I couldn't finish. In fact I had real trouble getting through the introduction. It's simply a tirade against capitalism. Don't waste your money unless you need something to line your cat's litter box.

Middle aged and finally able to read Shakespeare

I cannot more highly recommend this particular book, No Fear Shakespeare's Hamlet.

I am approaching 50 years old and my only real experience trying to read Shakespeare was in high school where we were assigned roles in class and made to read, without comprehension, Romeo and Juliet and Julius Cesar. In the interim, I tried watching a few plays and dragged my kids to see the play Taming of the Shrew, which they hated because they couldn't understand the language nor the plot. Rather than becoming a Shakespeare hater, I've always felt inadequate and dumb for this huge hole in my education.

My current inspiration to try Shakespeare again was my desire to try and help my high school aged son become more educated and cultured than I have been.

I tried first with the Folger annotated editions of Shakespeare. They look excellent and define the unfamiliar words, but I still could not make sense of a substantial portion of the dialogue. I guess maybe I'm just dumb, I don't know.

Anyway, I saw good reviews about this No Fear series, and I ordered several. So far I have read the modern English translations of Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, King Lear, and The Tempest. While I feel a bit like I'm 'cheating', I actually have really enjoyed all the plays and at least now I know the plots and the characters and even some of the more subtle themes. I can't answer the complaints that the translations don't adequately translate Shakespeare's meanings. There are a few side notes that point out double meanings and things like that, though there are not extensive footnotes or sidenotes.

To answer those who rate these books one or two stars, my answer is that they are at least a door into the world of Shakespeare for those of us unable to navigate the originals on our own. And they only take a couple of hours to read. It's not like this is a lifetime commitment or anything. The book only costs five bucks, so why not invest a couple of hours and read it? And, for me, I liked the plays so much that I AM now going to dig out the Folger editions and read the originals, with the No Fear books available in case I get in trouble. These modalities of trying to appreciate Shakespeare are not mutually exclusive.

Well, hopefully that's helpful to someone. I wanted to write this so that people would know that these books are not just for lazy students hoping to avoid reading the originals or somehow 'cheat' in their English classes. I'm not a Shakespeare scholar or teacher and never will be, just an ordinary guy, but for me, these books were the window of opportunity that I had been searching for. Two thumbs up, most definitely.

I felt like having the students use this version was a disadvantage ...

I am a high school teacher and this was the first "No Fear" play I've used for my English classes. Before this, I used the Folger editions. To be honest, I felt like having the students use this version was a disadvantage because they were no longer learning how to read Shakespearean language. While this does provide convenient translations--students start relying too heavily on them. In addition, the translations don't always translate every word/line; it's mostly a translation of the general meaning. Thus, again, students are not learning to really decipher the language. The Folger versions, on the other hand, give translations for specific words that students then have to plug in in order to understand the actual Shakespearean language. I'm switching back to Folgers next year. However, I'd still say that this would be fine as a companion piece for students to check their understanding, but I wouldn't use this as the only text.

Excellent critical text with helpful notes

I've been teaching Hamlet using this text for about two years (four semesters) to college freshmen/sophomores in a general composition/literature class. The Ignatius edition is the best that I've used (and I've used several); I put it slightly ahead of the Folger edition. (The Folger edition does have the advantage that it includes plot summaries of scenes -- very helpful to beginning Shakespeare readers -- which the Ignatius lacks.)

The essays that are included are solid and insightful. They are particularly helpful in helping readers understand the Christian context of the play. Regardless of whether or not the reader is Christian, it's necessary to understand Christian ideas about sin, repentance, and justice in order to grasp the nuances of the play. When students are encouraged to really think deeply about these topics, they end up making connections between the events of the play and the events of their own lives -- for instance, about the struggle between desire ("I want what I want" -- just like Claudius) and reason ("I want to do what is right -- but how do I figure out what that is?" -- like Hamlet). This edition has been the most useful for me in terms of helping my students to do this kind of deep thinking.

On a practical level, I like the editor's choices about what words to gloss; to any adult reader who has read a lot of Shakespeare and other classic authors, the vocabulary glosses may seem like overkill, but it has been my experience that my 18-22-year-old students need and benefit from them.

It is helpful that the glosses are footnoted rather than end- or side-noted; this makes it easier to find them if you need them, while not being too intrusive if you don't. Visually, it's an attractive edition with plenty of white space -- important for taking marginal notes! - and the full names of characters spelled out.

About the Author
Joey Yap is the founder of the Mastery Academy of Chinese Metaphysics, a global organisation devoted to the teaching of Feng Shui, BaZi, Mian Xiang and other Chinese Metaphysics subjects. He is also the Chief Consultant of Joey Yap Consulting Group, an international consulting firm specialising in Feng Shui and Chinese Astrology services and audits.

Joey Yap first began learning about Chinese Metaphysics from masters in the field when he was fifteen. Despite having graduated with a Commerce degree in Accounting, Joey never became an accountant. Instead, he began to give seminars, talks and professional Chinese Metaphysic consultations around the world, and has become an avid property investor who also holds an interest in diverse businesses. By the age of twenty-six, he became a self-made millionaire. In 2008, he was listed in The Malaysian Tatler as the Top 300 Most Influential People in Malaysia and Prestige s Top 40 Under 40.

He is also the bestselling author of over 75 books on Feng Shui, Chinese Astrology (BaZi), Face Reading and Yi Jing, which has sold more than 3 million copies to-date. Many of his titles have also topped the Malaysian and Singaporean MPH Bookstores bestseller lists.

Thousands of students from all around the world have learnt and mastered BaZi, Classical Feng Shui, and other Chinese Metaphysics subjects through Joey Yap s structured learning programs, books and online training. Joey Yap s courses are currently taught by instructors in over thirty countries worldwide.
