El 29 de abril de 1933, el poderoso industrial Jos� Salvo es atropellado
en plena calle por un autom�vil y morir� veinte d�as despu�s en un
sanatorio. Artigas Guich�n, el hombre que lo embisti�, ha quedado libre.
Pero todo Montevideo comenta que Ricardo Bonapelch, yerno de Salvo,
casado con su hija Mar�a Elisa, fue el instigador del "accidente", para
que su esposa cobrase la herencia y �l pudiera resarcirse de una serie
de malos negocios que lo pusieron al borde de la ruina.
En el verano neoyorkino del mismo a�o, una agencia de detectives recibe
un telegrama solicitando los servicios de un investigador privado para
indagar en el caso criminal m�s resonante del momento en Uruguay. Se le
encomienda a Guido Santini la tarea, por la sencilla raz�n de que �l
naci� en Montevideo y luego emigr� a los cinco a�os para ir a vivir a
Brooklyn con su familia. Habla bastante bien el espa�ol y se anima a
realizar una larga traves�a mar�tima para investigar el caso y
reencontrarse con la olvidada Montevideo de su infancia. A poco de
abordar un barco y dejar Manhattan, y luego de hacer una escala en La
Habana, el novato detective vivir� una serie de contratiempos, a bordo
del transatl�ntico Valdivia, que habr�n de templar su esp�ritu y
prepararlo para lo que lo espera en la capital sure�a.
Una vez que llega a destino, entiende dos cosas: no recuerda casi nada
de la ciudad y el presunto homicidio que debe investigar parece un caso
perdido. En Uruguay, hace tres meses que se ha instalado una dictadura
luego del golpe de Estado del 31 de marzo de 1933. Gabriel Terra, el
dictador, es amigo de Bonapelch y su poder parece cobijar al yerno de
Salvo que, adem�s de cazafortunas y vividor, tiene una caracter�stica
notable: es muy parecido f�sicamente al cantor Carlos Gardel, su amigo e
�dolo indiscutido del R�o de la Plata.
Escrita con el estilo y los recursos narrativos de una cl�sica novela
negra, Hugo Burel logra que los hechos de ficci�n se mezclen con los
sucesos reales hasta borrar los l�mites entre ambos. Santini se mueve
con el asombro y la mirada de un testigo lejano que va descubriendo la
oscura trama del crimen m�s famoso de la �poca. Y en ese itinerario nos
muestra la Montevideo de 1933, sus lugares y sus personajes, y la
atm�sfera siniestra que suele envolver a las buenas historias
detectivescas. Desde la primera l�nea, El Caso Bonapelch atrapa al
lector sin darle tregua y lo sumerge en una investigaci�n que culminar�
m�s de dos d�cadas despu�s de comenzada.
