Definitely more fun than generative grammar

Cognitive linguistics is one of the major theoretical approaches in linguistics. It is relatively new, and partly grew out of a response to two older approaches, generative grammar and truth-conditional semantics. This book is an introduction to this field and in it the authors defend three basic tenets of their philosophy. The first principle is aimed at generative grammar: language representation and processing is not a separate module in the mind, but is fundamentally similar to other general cognitive phenomena.
The second principle is aimed at truth-conditional semantics: meaning in language is conceptual, and cannot satisfactorily be accounted for in terms of situations meeting truth conditions.
The third principle is aimed at both of the former, which seek to maximise abstraction, and claims that language knowledge is ultimately based in experience.
A result of these three theses has been a greater openness to other academic disciplines, in particular cognitive psychology, from which it has adapted models concerning attention, memory, categorising and other cognitive abilities.

GOOD BOOKS

One of the most complete introduction to Cognitive Linguistics. It can be easily used a "textbook" for an introductory course on Cognitive Linguistics since it covers from basic notions (frames, domains, schemas, etc) to more complex agendas such as Construction Grammar. It is worth purchasing it!
